For Eight years conservatives lived with the fact that a black family was occupying "their" White House. A cool handsome black man with a beautiful black wife, and two beautiful young black daughters was more than many of them could handle with sanity. For them, this was a problem that could only be solved by having a white family in the White House. But more importantly, conservatives desperately needed a Donald Trump presidency because it would give them what Hillary Clinton and many of the other Republican candidates could not give them--a white lady in the White House. Conservatives had a visceral need to have a White first Lady of apparent European descent in the White House.
In the 2008 Presidential Campaign, a caller to a sports talk radio confessed that he could be OK with a Barack Obama presidency, because "he's half white. So he is a part of me. But I don't know if I can take a black first lady in the white house." Though he said it without anger or apparent malice, the thought of a Black First Lady was viscerally more abhorrent to him than a Black President.
First Lady Michelle Obama graced the White House with integrity, intelligence, elegance, beauty and grace. She complimented that with a definitive love for children and all Americans. In spite of her exemplary attributes and behavior, the vitriolic hate she encountered was unprecedented for reigning first Ladies. Through it all she remained a remarkable picture of composure, beauty elegance, and grace though she faced an unrelenting barrage of bitter unforgiving ugliness and rudeness.
Among the many political "outrages" the Black First Lady endured, none were more hypocritical than the rage conservative pundits and Republican politicians screamed when the Black First Lady Michelle Obama wore dresses that exposed her arms. But when nude magazine photographs of the future White first Lady, Melania Trump, were exposed, there was no outrage. In fact there were very few comments from the conservative far right nor from fundamentalists and other hypocrite on the Christian right at all. No outrage for photos that they would have demonized as pornographic if the nude magazine layouts had been of Michelle Obama instead of Melania Trump.
At least one prominent Republican congressman was on record that the nude pictures of Melania Trump, including those of her with another nude woman was "art".
Although there is some question about whether or not Melania Trump will perform the duties of First Lady while residing in the White House instead of her New York apartment, On January 21, 2017, Americans who voted for Donald Trump got what they desperately needed. They have a White First Lady, even if she may or may not reside in the White House.
It is a pathetic and unfortunate commentary on the United States Of America that so many Americans did not appreciate the integrity, beauty, elegance, and love with which America's first Black FLOTUS graced the White House the last eight years.
